The winter prior to the 2005 vintage was extremely cold and dry, leaving water reserves completely empty after an already dry and hot 2004. The growing season started later than usual due to cold weather and water shortages. The entire growing season was characterized by lower vigor and smaller berry diameter for all grape varieties. From May 16 to September 6 there was no more rain. Despite the extreme drought and heat, the ripening process proceeded normally, albeit more slowly than usual. Fortunately, the dry summer conditions were relieved by a steady rainfall between September 6th and 9th, giving the vines the critical relief they needed to complete the ripening process and offer a fully ripe and balanced crop.
Harvest fields are probably Krohn's most valued and recognized fields. Colheita port's types of grapes come from a single year of high quality that must spend at least seven years in wood. As a rule, they are only bottled immediately before they are sold, which can happen long after the seventh year. For this reason, our Colheitas remain in wood for a long time, and over time acquire a mahogany color characteristic of old nies, as well as a fine and complex bouquet with notes of walnuts and hazelnuts and a silky texture.
During aging in wood, they are subject to quality control by the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro and Porto. On the other hand, the year of production and the year of bottling after bottling must be indicated on the label. The risk of forming a deposit at the bottom of the bottle is small, since it was mostly kept in the wooden container where the wine was stored. Once the bottle is opened, it is not mandatory to drink it in its entirety on the same day - stop it well and it can be stored under these conditions for a long time. The next time it is opened again, it will offer the consumer an aroma and taste of practically delicacy.
Enjoy a Porto Colheita at the end of the meal with creamy cheeses such as Brie and Camembert or with Serra cheese. Also accompany it with roasted chestnuts or burnt cream.
Krohn was founded in 1865 by two young Norwegians, Theodor Wiese and Dankert Krohn. Over the next century and a half, the company built a remarkable reputation for its barrel-aged port wines, particularly Colheita. Krohn is also known for his elegantly constructed vintages originating from his estate in the Rio Torto valley, Quinta do Retiro Novo.
Krohn has achieved remarkable recognition over the years for his phenomenal harvests. It is one of the leaders in the production of Colheita Port Wines with reserves of rare wines from the 19th century aged in cask. In addition, Krohn produces some of the most recognized and sought after Vintage Ports.
