But the distillation methods were improved, and with the establishment of De Danske Spritfabrikker in 1881, the number of distilleries fell. The monopoly on schnapps production was in the hands of this factory until 1973. Neighboring countries such as Norway and Sweden also had their monopoly on aquavit production, and many well-known brands date from this period.
